Hazardous Waste is subject to the requirements of the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005 and Waste Amalgam from dental care collected by separator or disposed of from premises other than through a separator is subject to the requirements of these regulations. These regulations require that all hazardous waste be tracked from the point of production to the final point of disposal. As a producer of hazardous waste you are legally required to register your premises with the Environment Agency annually. Dentists will be exempt from the requirement to notify if less than 200kg of hazardous Waste is produced at the premises in any twelve month period. This threshold will apply to all hazardous waste produced at the premises not just amalgam and consideration will need to be given to other hazardous wastes such as Infectious clinical waste Fixer and Developer Batteries Old redundant IT Equipment (covered under the WEEE regulations) Fluorescent Light Tubes Refrigeration units
Whilst many small dental practices will be exempt to this requirement, it is
important to note that this exemption is only available to those premises that produce less than 200kg of hazardous waste per annum.
It will be an offence for any waste collection and disposal company to collect waste from a site that
has not been notified or is not exempt. |
