Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment [WEEE] is one of the fastest growing types of waste in the western world. Each year over 2m tonnes of new electrical equipment is sold in the UK alone. One day all of these products will become waste. The WEEE Directive which was implemented in July 2007 aims to divert WEEE from landfill by increasing the proportion that is separately collected, and where possible is re-used or sent to a specialist for treatment and recycling. The Directive would also encourage manufacturers to think about re-use and recycling when designing new products. Whatever your WEEE requirements Burrwood Environmental have the answer. Some of the most common items to be found in the workplace are fridges, microwaves, computers, printers, coffee machines, water coolers, shredders, faxes, photocopiers to name but a few.
Some of these items contain hazardous materials such as heavy metal, mercury, lead and cadnium. If these items were sent to landfill or incinerated without any pre-treatment it would have the potential to contaminate the air, water and soil.
Therefore all equipment collected is assessed and either restored for re-use, or stripped of components for re-use and then destroyed for recycling. IT media is physically destroyed for data destruction however for clients with sensitive data we recommend our certified data destruction service to NISPOM standards for peace of mind and added security.
